Computer Science Into The Curriculum - 1524 Words
Computing Computer Science back into the Curriculum Imagine I am an employer and I m looking to hire someone with computer science skills. Now I look for people who have the skills required for the position. And then something surprises me, thereââ¬â¢s hardly anyone who qualifies. What do I do? Do I hire someone who will learn on the job, or someone who already has the skills needed for the position? I will do the latter and outsource to someone from outside the US and bring him in using an H-1B working visa. However Iââ¬â¢m not the only company, thatââ¬â¢s using this same solution. In fact, so many other companies are outsourcing, that there arenââ¬â¢t enough H-1B visas to go around. Obama has recognized this problem and has increased the number ofâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Across America we must change the way we educate our students on computer science in secondary education, for computer science is the only field out of the STEM (science technology engineering math) fields that has seen a decrease in student part icipation in the last 20 years despite itââ¬â¢s rapid growth. If technology is the future, we need to better prepare our nationââ¬â¢s students for it. I have first hand experience of the lack of computer science exposure and education in Californiaââ¬â¢s school system. I wasnââ¬â¢t exposed through a class and I had no interest or knowledge of programming at all. I was in the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition in my sophomore year of High School. Our robot required programming code to run, and out of our whole team of 36 people, only one of us knew how to program. He graduated that same year, and left our team with some big shoes to fill. Because of the need I learned how to fill his position by taking a class at my local community college the next summer. When it came for next yearââ¬â¢s competition, I was ready. However my schoolââ¬â¢s team wasnââ¬â¢t the only one with a graduated programmer. Out of all 5 schools from my surrounding school district no one knew how to code including the teachers leading the teams in each school. To educate the teams in our
